Batavia Quay is one of the closest ramps to the mouth of the Murray River. It is located on the Peel Estuary and has a solid ramp for boat launching, two jetties for kayak launching and ample trailer parking. From here, it's a short journey around to the mouth of the Murray River and the start of your adventurous day.
After launching, head down river, out to the Peel Harvey Estuary (remember the 8-knot speed limit). Relax with some bird watching, dolphin spotting or fishing for herring, tailor, bream and if you’re lucky, a mulloway. Crabbing is a must-do activity when in season (Dec 1 – Aug 31), so make sure you pack all the right equipment for a quintessentially Aussie day on the water.
If you’ve got little ones in tow, head to Coopers Mill. You’ll find it on Cooleenup Island and as it’s only accessible by boat, getting there is an adventure in itself. Once ashore, there are basic amenities, a playground, barbeque and the chance for a lazy swim or paddle to cool off in the shallow waters.
Dawdle further upriver, through the canals of South Yunderup and stop for a cheeky pint in the beer garden at Sandy Cove Tavern. Open from 10am, Sandy Cove Tavern is a local favourite. Tucked in a side branch of the main Murray River and surrounded by waterfront homes. The Tavern features a kids playground and a large alfresco area to enjoy a relaxing drink and a light meal.
All the usual favourites of pub dining are featured on the menu and lunch specials are available mid-week. Watch sport in the front bar or check the race day calendar to wager a punt on the Pinjarra Races at the on-site TAB, whilst enjoying the relaxed, friendly service.
Back onto the main river tributary, your next stop is the iconic
Ravenswood Hotel. Renowned for its idyllic setting, live entertainment, great food and friendly atmosphere, the Ravenswood Hotel offers a truly unique experience anytime of year. From humble beginnings as a wheat farm in 1838, the Ravenswood Hotel is now a historic slice of Australiana.
The charming riverside Restaurant and Lounge Bar provides affordable bistro dining, Monday to Thursday, for lunch and dinner and all day dining Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It's one of the most popular venues in the Murray region. So, if cruising on a weekend or public holiday, expect it to be busy. However, the restaurant has an excellent reputation and a great menu catering for all tastes. A great choice for lunch on your river trail.
Heading back along the river following lunch, your afternoon stop is Jetty's Bar and Grill. This is one of the larger hotels along the Murray River with plenty of jetty space to moor your boat. A large lawn sits adjacent to the alfresco dining area with plenty of room for kids to run and explore. On a warm day, the jetty's make for a perfect ramp to run and jump into the water!
Make a splash or simply relax in the friendly, casual atmosphere and watch the steady stream of kayaks glide by. Enjoy a refreshing drink and chill to live music on most Sunday afternoons. A great stop to enjoy the company of your favourite people.
Take the day to cruise and explore the Murray River and the magnificent Peel – Harvey Estuary system by boat. Have a swim, enjoy a picnic, hunt for crabs, fish for bream, moor at one of our famous water holes & pubs and discover what makes life in this region so special.
Yunderup and Ravenswood are truly unique destinations that offer plenty of opportunities to create your own day out on the river. With boat ramps at Batavia Quays, Sandy Cove, Tatham’s or North Yunderup there are plenty of places to launch your boat and explore the fantastic offerings available along your journey up and down the Murray River.
Start your morning with a hearty breakfast or a casual, mid-morning coffee at Pelican's on The Murray. They open early and offer an all day menu. Simply tie up, wander up the ramp and make your selection.
Choose a peaceful spot and watch the river boats and houseboats glide by. Don't be suprised to see some playful dolphins frolicking about and consider calling in on your return journey to watch the sunset.
Pets are welcome and they also cater for takeaways. Pelican's on The Murray is also the only location to refuel on the river.
